Featured Build: Wes Jones’ OEM+ Turbo Accord Sleeper

Before this car, I owned a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L Track. After an accident, I had to start over and find something new. Around that time, my buddy Corey had a 400whp Accord, and he let me take it for a drive. That was really the turning point. I loved the way it drove, the space inside, as well as the overall balance of comfort and performance. Once I realized how much potential the Accord platform had (how good it looked) it was hard to ignore.

I’ve always been into modifying my cars, but having a close friend who owned a company focused on this platform made the process a lot easier. The access to parts, knowledge, and support helped this build come together far more smoothly than anything I’d done before.

The Good, the Bad, and the Boost

The worst part about owning this car is easily the ECU limitations. The platform has so much potential, but the factory fuel and tuning constraints really keep it from becoming what it could be without getting creative. On the flip side, the best part right now is simple: the turbo whistle and how quick the car is. There’s nothing like hearing boost come on and feeling the car pull hard when you roll into it.

Current Mod List

At this point, the car is basically “everything but a built motor.” The setup includes:

If I had to pick a favorite, it’s hands down the T51R mod. You just can’t beat the sound of a good turbo whistle; it makes every pull feel special.

Install, Drive, Repeat

All of the work on this car was done by me. I’ve always loved working on my own cars, and being able to save on labor just means more money for parts. That hands-on connection also makes the car feel more personal.

My favorite memories with the Accord come from driving it hard, especially in the mountains at night. I’ve also taken it on track days, including one in pouring rain. I was honestly nervous about spinning or going off track, but somehow it ended up being one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in the car. It almost felt faster in the rain.

If there’s one regret, it’s not getting the 6-speed manual. The 10-speed automatic is an incredible transmission but I do miss the feeling of rowing my own gears.

Challenges & Future Plans

The biggest challenge with this build has been making real power. Without full control of the factory fuel system, progress is slow unless you add supplemental fueling like meth or nitrous. Most companies aren’t pushing the Accord platform much further right now, but I’m hopeful that will change.

As for what’s next, I’m always chasing more power. A methanol kit is on the list, and I’ve got something else coming soon that should add a noticeable bump...hopefully more than just a little.

Build Philosophy

I’d describe the car as OEM+ with a track-focused, sleeper vibe. It’s what I think Honda should have built from the factory. Most people see a lowered Accord and don’t expect much, but at nearly 400whp, it surprises people...especially when it starts carving corners.

Every time I put my foot down and feel the boost hit, I fall in love with the car all over again.

Community, Events, and Advice

The car community has influenced my build by showing me both what I like and what I definitely don’t want to do. I’ve taken the car to meets, track days, and events, but I enjoy driving it more than standing around it. The Tail of the Dragon stands out above everything else; nothing beats ripping through mountain roads.

For anyone just starting out, my advice is simple: do your research. Figure out what you actually like so you don’t have to redo things later. Build the car for you, not for anyone else.

Dream Setup & Final Thoughts

If budget weren’t an issue, I’d fully build the engine to handle anything I throw at it and then convert the car to AWD so I could really put the power down.

A lot of people still see the Accord as a grocery getter or a grandpa car, but with the right mods and that stock 10-speed, it can seriously upset people on the street.

This build wouldn’t exist without Corey and Two Step Performance. They’re the reason I bought this car and the reason it’s become what it is today.

Every car I’ve owned has meant something to me, but this one is different. This is the first car I’ve truly been able to build exactly how I want, and that makes it special.
